Getting started with an eclipse IDE / SDK tools – Ubuntu/Debian system

 The eclipse IDE  is one of the applications that you can write an application for your android OS. It has the ADT (android development tools) designed with a powerful application builder integrated environment . For eclipse to run on any system or OS, it needs you to obtain any java implementation eg openJDK/openJRE  or oracle/sun java;

For the current implementation, the post will explain the steps to install eclipse on an openJDK and/or openJRE environments. You will first have to confirm if the packages in question are already installed in an Ubuntu environment. In a minimal install, however,  openjdk and openjre are not generic packages bundled with linux OS which means we proceed with their installation from their sources.

#use the apt-get tool to automatically install the java environment from the sources.

Install both Open JDK and JRE  runtime environment in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre

To install sun / oracle java6 runtime environment copy paste the command in a terminal

sudo apt-get install sun-java-jre sun-java-jdk sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

to install android Software development kit in a 64 bit machine you may need to install additional libraries ia32-libs

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

Check if you have the correct version of open JDK/JRE  java runtime environment installed by typing:

java -version

javac -version

you will get  outputs simmilar to:

Java 1.70

javac 1.7.0

Installing and configuring eclipse IDE  source binary

These are the steps to have eclipse SDK source binary tools installed in your system,.

Create a folder within your home directory and change to that location to uncompress the binary source files.

mkdir -p /home/user/name of directory

cd /home/user/name of directory

Get the 64 bit  source binary file from the eclipse website (choose the suitable source for your system). Alternatively you can decide to use the shorter route to retrieve the source files interacting the system with the download location in a terminal.

sudo wget -C http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.7.2-201202080800/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.7.2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

Untar the source binary within the selected location

sudo -s chmod a+x eclipse-SDK-3.7.2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

sudo -s tar xvzf eclipse-SDK-3.7.2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

You can create a symbolic link from your eclipse directory to the the desktop

cd /home/user/Desktop

sudo ln -s /home/user/name of directory/folder-with-contents-of-eclipse-extracted-binary

Installing the android SDK:

get the latest android  tar ball and uncompress it in the location where you uncompressed the eclipse IDE binary sources you can opt to do a wget tool

cd /home/user/name of directory

sudo wget http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r21.0.1-linux.tgz

untar the tar ball within the selected folder

sudo android-sdk_r21.0.1-linux.tgz

And make sure that the uncompressed folder is writable and executable for all users that will access the directory.

sudo chmod -R a+x  /home/user/name of directory/folder-with-contents-of-android-SDK-extracted-binary

You optionally can decide to include the path variable for android SDk tools in either of the files; .bashrc, .profile, or  the etc/profile

Save and exit the file

You are now ready to use you newly installed and integrated eclipse IDE/SDK and android SDK tools to develop android applications
